Diploma of Ageing & Pastoral Care

A four unit Diploma Course specifically targeted at those who have a role to play in the care and emotional and spiritual well being of Senior Australians in a culturally sensitive manner – Chaplains, pastoral carers, community carers, care and lifestyle staff in residential aged care, community volunteers, or those interested in their own journey of ageing.

The Diploma offers you knowledge and practical skills related to:

  • The process of ageing and the physical, emotional and spiritual challenges involved.
  • Effective communication skills
  •  Assessing and meeting needs
  • Team approach to meeting needs
  • Practical strategies to promote resident well being and meet Accreditation Standard 3
  • Understanding of Spirituality
  • The spiritual tasks of ageing
  • Ethical issues and ageing
  • Ritual and  celebration in the lives of the elderly
  • Devotional practice
  • Personal growth and formation
  • Dying and Death
  • Dementia

Requirements

A commitment to work 8 hours per week with the elderly in a residential aged care facility or community context for the duration of each unit (96 hours).

Pastoral Care consists of four units

  • Ageing & Pastoral Care
  • Challenges of Pastoral Care
  • Dementia and Pastoral Care
  •  Dying, Death and Pastoral Care

Each unit consists of three modules

  • A module is a two day block of teaching/learning in a group environment
  • Attendance is from 9:30am to 4:00pm each day
  • The two day teaching/ learning  workshops are held once a month over a three month period,  in February – June and August - November
  • Between face to face sessions participants will be required to engage in pastoral care in a residential care or community setting
  • The four units can be completed in two years
  • Individual course units may be offered

Course Assessment

  • The course covers 10 units of Competency which are assessed on an ongoing basis throughout the course

Course Fees

  • Current course fees are $450 per unit
  • Holy Family Services is a Registered Training Organisation
  • The Diploma of Ageing and Pastoral Care is a Nationally Accredited Course
